However, they need their barcode on all of the products they order from your company. Oh no, what now? If you're with a 3PL it should be no problem. If it is, then you’re with the wrong 3PL.
Many 3PLs offer kitting services. Do you need a different barcode on an item? No problem! You want to create a fun little Valentine’s promotional item, and you need two items inside of this cute heart box and this will be a new SKU on your website? No problem! Your manufacturer put the wrong directions inside the boxes of your item, and you need the incorrect instructions removed and the correct instructions put back in the product box? No problem! I think you get the idea.
3PLs are great and fantastic in helping your company reach your goals. However, we are not mind readers, so be prepared to answer some questions. Once you have given your 3PL all the necessary information just sit back, put your feet up and breathe, because you know it’s all being taken care of. Okay, let’s be realistic you probably won’t do that, but with kitting projects off your plate, you now have time for customer service, product development, or placing orders for more products. Okay, you put in your kitting request, now what? How long until it’s ready? How much will it cost me? The definitive answer is: it always depends. Agh, what kind of answer is that?! Okay, before you stop reading out of frustration let me explain. Kitting projects are usually charged by time. Why? The reason is that not everything is the same. Putting together a regular box is quicker than putting together a tab-locking box.
What if the stickers come in a roll that isn’t perforated and we need to use scissors to separate the stickers? That will take time. So how long will a project take, again it depends. Sometimes a kitting project can be turned around in a day, sometimes it takes a little longer. Maybe we need to wait for components, maybe we have other clients that are also putting together a Valentine’s SKU. This is why you want to give your 3PL as much information as possible and talk to them about your timeline.
